WEEKLY THOUGHTS

Support Management, Not Control Them

November 13, 2023

When we buy a company, we know the success of the business is dependent upon the leadership of the business. We are here to support the management team, not control them.  Supporting the management team requires a balance between providing guidance, resources, and a conducive environment for them to excel.

First and foremost, we must set a clear vision, mission, and values TOGETHER, ensuring that the management team understands the broader objectives. This foundation will help them make decisions that align with the company's overarching goals.

Trust and empowerment are essential. When we give the management team the autonomy to make operational decisions, it empowers them and gives them confidence, knowing we believe in them. In doing so, we create a sense of accountability and it fosters an environment where the management and the rest of the employees can thrive. This is how trust is built.

If the management team isn’t improving, then how can we expect the business to improve? Growing the business and improving the bottom line is done in a variety of ways but it’s not always in the product or service of the business. One key way to support our businesses is by investing in management’s professional development.

We aren’t going to micromanage and ask for an update every day. Management has a business to run but regular communication is key to maintaining transparency and keeping everyone aligned. We will have meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and strategic initiatives, and more importantly, we will be available for questions and feedback.

We will provide the resources and support to the management team's needs, both financial and non-financial. This includes providing access to necessary capital, technology, and training. These resources are crucial to the long-term success of the business and being a long-term holder gives the time for these investments to materialize into the growth of the business.
